A lot goes into what makes your body burn more fat, but putting genetics and diet aside and placing everyone on a level playing field - people place too much emphasis on cardio to change their body composition. Having been in the personal training industry for 25 years I have seen all types of exercise plans to try and burn fat...people believe that cardio burns more fat than weight training. Directly, it does. But indirectly - they are not even comparable. Obviously fitness training with weights builds muscle and muscle at rest burns about 8 times more calories than fat at rest. So just for example let's say you burn ONE EXTRA CALORIE every five minutes at rest by having 10% less body fat than the next person. That is an extra 350 Calories each day...your body becomes a fireplace! The more muscle you add, the greater the burn!!! The best part about it is that as long as you are weight training, it doesn't go away! Cardio burns fat when you are doing it, and for a few minutes after you are done, but fitness training with weights keeps burning - at work, when you are eating, when you are sleeping...it is like an "insurance policy" covering you when you have those "slips" in your diet! Don't get me wrong - exercise plans for weight loss require cardio, but exercise plans for permanent weight loss never leave out weight training!
