This time of year, no matter where you live (unless it is the Arctic) it is hot, and battling the heat can be tough on the body thus leaving no motivation to keep the body in shape. Here are a few things you can do to stay cool and stay fit throughout the summer heat:
1. Drink Plenty of Water - The key to cool is hydration. Your body's natural cooling mechanism is sweating and it is imperative to keep well hydrated to keep your cooling system active. I have mentioned many times before how water can also help you keep your energy levels up, but even more so this time of year! Remember: Hydration takes time. You can't drink water and be instantly hydrated...it takes about 6 hours to reach the cellular level where it makes a difference. So plan for the times you will need it.
2. Early Morning/Late Night Workouts - Beat the Heat by taking your walk, jog, or hike early in the morning or later at night. If this is not possible, then there is nothing wrong with resorting to the treadmill or stationary bike for a couple of months. I know, it is boring, but in this day and age of technology they have made cardio pieces pretty interactive...and they really take the "treadmill effect" out of the treadmill.
3. Wear Moisture Wicking Material When Exercising - Whether you are indoors or out, it is important to allow your body to breathe. Remember those "rubber" shirts people used to wear, because they thought if they sweat more, they lose more weight? Wrong! Very dangerous and your body will not respond as well if the cooling system doesnt have a place to release. You can find "mositure management" material from almost every exercise clothing manufacturer out there now.
4. Wear Sunblock When Exercising Outdoors - If you have to be out during the hot times, wear sun block. While you wear block for the obvious reasons of protection from UV rays...you also don't want that sunburn that makes you hot and uncomfortable when you sweat during exercise.
5. Join a Gym - maybe you like exercising outside, but sometimes (especially here in Phoeinx) it is tough to workout in the heat all of the time - especially when trying to get in some resistance training mixed with cardio. Nothing wrong with having a gym membership and combining it with your outdoor routine...just follow the other tips above and you will be fine.
During exercise, getting hot is inevitable, but you can do these simple things to help you get through the heat this summer.
