Calorie Counts on Fast Food Menus - Will it Really Help? |

Yum Brands Inc (parent company of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC, A&W, and Long John Silvers) announced they will be voluntarily adding calorie counts on all of their menus in their company owned stores. The goal is to have it in all stores, but that will be left to individual owners.
Okay, fine...I applaud the effort, but I am not sure if it matters.
Take a look at the cigarette industry. There is a Surgeon General Warning right on the label, basically saying you will die earlier in life if you smoke - didn't stop smokers! Cigarettes have been highly taxed for years, and continued to increase in price on a yearly basis...that didn't stop smokers.
Now since then, state legislation has made it very inconvenient for people to smoke, and that is the key! Americans like convenience, and until you make it inconvenient, people will still consume it.
How about banning drive-thru's at restaurants. That would keep some people away from fast food on a regular basis. While I really do applaud the effort they are giving, I believe they know as well as I do - people don't care what is in the food. Does anyone really believe fast food is the best option, or even good for you?
